According to the testimonies of Armenian historians, Amaras has been a famous religious and cultural center since the 4th century, when Gregory The Illuminator founded a church here. In the 5th century Mesrop Mashtots opened one of the first Armenian schools here. The church, surrounded with a formidable rampart, is built of white well-hewn limestone. It had been destroyed by invaders for several times, being restored each time.
